We stayed for 11 nights early October and would recommend it to people who are looking for a 'homely and tradional' place. Right in the centre of Lucca, breakfast more than sufficient and varied. It was continental and they supplied me with a gluten free option as well. Supermarket just behind L'Altana (very useful) and a 20 minute walk to the train station, great for exploring the sites. It was a really delightful place to stay and the 69 steps to the appartment is well worth the effort. We will be passing our recommendations to our friends and would stay there again So enjoy............... Sue and Keith (mk)
-The lighting was abit dark, especially as we were staying early autumn and it rained quite hard on occasions, hence we did alot of reading!!

This is a gem in the heart of the old city of Lucca, just one block off of Via Filungo, the main shopping district. We had a beautiful two-room suite and private bath - original beamed ceilings added to the ambiance. One room was a sitting room with mini kitchen that we greatly enjoyed - gorgeous exposure to the west allowed for nice late afternoon sunsets and a beautiful view of two of Lucca's bell towers. Breakfast was served in our suite each morning, which was a very nice touch. The bedroom was large and very attractive. We spent our first three days in Lucca at a different hotel but ended up extending our time in the city by two days. Our initial hotel was not available for the additional time so we searched for different accommodations through Booked.net. We consider ourselves very, very fortunate to have found B&B L'Altana and wish we had been there the entire time. This is a very well-kept secret!
Potential guests should be aware of a number of things. First, it is somewhat hard to find. There are only two suites and they are located on the top floor of a residential building - there is no signage on the front of the building; the b&b has a buzzer with a little placard just like any of the other residents. Second, like all of the ancient buildings in Lucca there is no elevator and there are a lot of steps to navigate - this was challenging with a 50-pound garment bag. As mentioned above, breakfast is served in the room. While we found it wonderful, it was less substantial than what would be found at a larger hotel. In the bathroom, the shower was extremely small for a 6'3", 240 pound person. Visitors should know that toiletries are not provided, nor is there a hair dryer.

Very old building in the heart of Lucca, thank goodness for air conditioning since it was very hot during our stay. Our hostess was very charming, made us feel very comfortable.
There was no elevator, we had to carry our luggage up 5 flights of stairs, It would be fine for younger people. No parking !!! the closest lot was one eruo and hour, so we parked in the lots outside the city walls. Took a cab 10 minutes to get us to our car
